Taking careful note of this and other scriptures suggests that directly rebuking the devil is not what we are supposed to do. So the archangel Michael rebuked Satan in the name of the Father, the same way Jesus did it. Jude 1:9: But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, judicially argued (disputed) about the body of Moses, he dared not bring an abusive condemnation against him, but said, The Lord rebuke you! Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.įor example, we are not to “rebuke” Satan, the Lord rebukes Satan. I find that some scriptures references are for the Lord only (And I believe this one is) and for our knowledge only. Our command is to “put on” the Whole Armour of God so that we might stand firm and “resist the devil.” We are told to “Draw near to God and he will draw near to us. The Bible teaches us to love our enemies. “The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.” This is a promise to Jesus (Psalm 110:1)Ī psalm of David. Using the Scriptures to expose Satan’s lies and temptations is the most effective way to strive against and defeat them.

Or it can be an action we take to use the only offensive weapon in the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-18), the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. Resistance can be resisting or withstanding the temptation to sin. “resist the devil” is found in James 4:7 where the apostle James exhorts believers to resist the devil in order to cause him to flee or “run away” from us. Jesus turned to Peter and said “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s (Matt 16:23).” Scripture tells mankind to love our enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to those that hate you, and pray for those who speak evil about you, and persecute you etc. The promise here is from the Lord to the Lord Jesus Christ, that He will reign until He (the LORD) have put all of his enemies under His feet. ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’ It’s my understanding that this scripture is referring to the enemies of the Messiah.
